KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Ahli Sunnah Waljamaah Organisation (Aswaja) president Zamihan Mat Zin, who came under fire for speaking out against a decree by the Sultan of Johor, was arrested by police this afternoon.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said Zamihan was arrested at the Dang Wangi police headquarters, here, at 3.50pm.

He said the non-governmental organisation leader was expected to be brought before a magistrate for a remand order tomorrow to facilitate investigations under Section 4 of the Sedition Act.

In a video uploaded on YouTube on Oct 8, Zamihan had allegedly spoken out Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar who had last month ordered a Muslim-only laundrette in Muar to cease its discriminatory business practice.

He was alleged to have said it was not right for the sultan, as the head of Islam in the state, to issue such a decree.

He did not name the Sultan of Johor in his talk but gave strong hints that he was referring to Sultan Ibrahim.

Zamihan earlier today denied criticising the Johor ruler, but had apologised to him.

He described news reports on the matter as “clearly malicious and slanderous”. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
