Consumer Protection Organisations Should Follow Rules - Minister

KEPALA BATAS: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) today called on all associations, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), not to ignore the law in championing the rights of consumers.

Minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said in taking action, they should follow rules and not act in defiance of the existing laws.

He said NGOs were allowed to fight for consumer rights as long as they followed proper procedures and acted according to the law.

"If the NGOs wish to represent consumers, do it the proper way. We have laws in the country," he told reporters after the Friends Of KPDNKK launch here today.

He was commenting on the recent arrest of two Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) activists.

The duo surrendered at the Kajang police headquarters, while accompanied by a lawyer and several other PPIM activists to facilitate investigations into an intrusion at a car leasing company premises in Hulu Langat last July.
