Robbery suspect in Shah Alam sustains gunshot wound fleeing from police

SHAH ALAM: A robbery suspect was shot on his thigh Saturday afternoon when he and an accomplice tried to flee police checks by ramming their car into cops, here.

In the 1pm incident, a team of policemen from the Negri Sembilan D9 Unit (Serious Crime Division) had gone to an apartment complex in Section 13 following a lead on an armed robbery gang.

Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said the policemen were monitoring a Toyota Vios at the apartment's parking area, before they spotted the two suspects entering the vehicle about 90 minutes later.

"Upon realising that they were surrounded by police, the suspects sped off and rammed into a police car.

"The police team were forced to fire several shots when the driver repeatedly rammed the police vehicle to get away.

"The suspects then managed to flee from the parking area, prompting a high speed pursuit which saw police chasing them to Section 7 (Shah Alam), where the men suddenly stopped their car and tried to flee on foot," he said.

Shafien said the men, aged 31 and 35, however, did not manage to run far.

They were apprehended just 500m away from their vehicle.

When they were arrested, police discovered that the 35-year-old suspect, also the driver of the Vios, had sustained a gunshot wound on his right thigh.

They then sent him to the Shah Alam Hospital for treatment.

Shafien said police later raided a unit at the apartment, where they arrested a man and woman aged 22 and 32, respectively.

The raiding party also found three fake guns and several handphones, believed to be stolen items, in the premises. © New Straits Times Press
