PETALING JAYA: The Malay Rulers have voiced their appreciation for the Sultan of Johor and the Raja Muda of Perlis who forbade the Muslims-only launderettes in their respective states.

In a statement issued by Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Tan Sri Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, he said the positions taken by Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail in these instances showed their commitment to ensuring that Muslims behave with respect, moderation and inclusiveness in a nation which is home to people of many different ethnic groups and religions.

Sultan Ibrahim spoke at length about his unhappiness with the launderette and demanded that the owner apologise to him and the people of Johor.

In an exclusive report by The Star on Sept 27, His Majesty said: “I cannot accept this nonsense. This is Johor, which belongs to Bangsa Johor and it belongs to all races and faiths. This is a progressive, modern and moderate state.

Sultan Ibrahim also added that the owner went against the vision of a united, harmonious, moderate and tolerant Johor.

The owner of the launderette apologised for his actions and opened his door to all customers.

On Sept 28, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin visited the launderette in Kangar with his mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin to tell its owner why his business model was not acceptable. The 36-year-old owner then opened his outlet to all customers, too.

The Malay Rulers have expressed their concerns over issues of unity and harmony in the country in light of recent controversies.
Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Tan Sri Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said the actions of certain individuals have “gone beyond all acceptable standards of decency, putting at risk the harmony that currently exists within the multi-religious and multi-ethnic society”.
He said in a press statement that the Rulers were of the opinion that the damaging implications of such actions were more severe when they are erroneously associated with or committed in the name of Islam.
“As a religion that encourages its followers to be respectful, moderate and inclusive, the reputation of Islam must not ever be tainted by the divisive actions of certain groups or individuals which may lead to rifts among the rakyat.
He added that unity among Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious people is key to ensuring the country’s ongoing stability and after 60 years of independence, Malaysians must continue to act in accordance with the principles embodied within the Constitution and manifested in the spirit of the Rukunegara.
“The Rukunegara, which was proclaimed as our national philosophy by the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Aug 31, 1970, outlines five aspirations and five guiding principles for the country.
“It must continue to serve as a compass to all parties, be they leaders, government officials or citizens of our country,” the statement added.
Among the issues that stirred controversy recently were the two Muslims-only launderettes, in Johor and Perlis.
