Police arrest suspect in hit-and-run at pedestrian crossing
GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested the suspect of a hit-and-run which caused the death of a 58-year-old woman.
Foo Swee Wah was killed after she was hit by a motorcyclist who ran the red light at a pedestrian crossing in Burma Road, near the Pulau Tikus police station on Thursday.
OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the suspect was arrested at Penang Hospital and later brought to the northeast district traffic police station.
"The suspect was also injured due to the accident," he said in a statement on Friday.
Police have yet to reveal the identity of the suspect.
Foo sustained severe head injuries and a broken leg in the 10am accident and died at 8.45pm.
Foo, who is believed to be a coffee-shop operator, was crossing the road after the light had turned green for pedestrians when the accident occurred.
She was about to reach the other side of the road when the motorcyclist rammed into her, causing her to be thrown a few metres.
The motorcyclist's helmet was flung off his head in the impact but he sped away from the scene without stopping.
