PETALING JAYA: A man who goes by the name "Datuk Kabi" has pleaded not guilty in the magistrate's court here to cheating a senior citizen of RM150,000.
Datuk Kabi, whose real name is C. Kamaleshwaran (pic), 38, was charged with allegedly deceiving Foo Kee Peng, 68, at a hotel lobby on March 31 last year, by claiming he would settle the victim's Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) summonses.
The accused was charged with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10 years in jail, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
In asking for a reasonable bail on Friday, his lawyer V. Saravanan said Kamaleshwaran only earned RM5,000 a month as a retailer and had to take care of his four small children and his parents who are in their 70s.
"He also cooperated with the police when he was in remand for three days," Saravanan said.
Magistrate Salamiah Salleh set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and fixed May 19 for next mention.
DPP Mary Phoon Keat Mee prosecuted the case.
