FAM terminate 20 staff, national team are Harimau Malaya again
HARIMAU MALAYSIA RENAMED HARIMAU MALAYA |
PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have terminated the services of 20 staff.
FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said in a statement yesterday that the decision to trim the workforce was to reduce the operating costs and ensure the administration of the association served the right purpose.
“FAM president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and the Exco agreed to restructure the administration.
“The 20 staff whose services were terminated today would receive three months’ salary before April 15,” he said.
He said the restructuring exercise would see the departments within the FAM streamlined according to the responsibilities of the department.
Meanwhile, the national football team will be known as Harimau Malaya again.
In a statement posted on the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) website yesterday, new president Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim said the national team will now be known as Harimau Malaya.
Previously, Harimau Malaya was used to identify the team.
But it was changed to Harimau Malaysia by then president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah in February last year in a bid to inspire Malaysia to improve their worst-ever FIFA ranking of 171 in the world (out of 209 teams).
Tengku Abdullah also launched a new logo and theme song for the Harimau Malaysia.
FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said yesterday that Tunku Ismail wanted the original name to be used due to the fans’ request and the rich history of past national teams.
