SHAH ALAM: The debates between Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and another one involving the former’s son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, should not be allowed
Former Selangor mentri besar Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar said they would not benefit anyone.
Abu Hassan, who is now Selangor Former Elected Representatives Council chairman, said it was good that the police did not agree to the debates.
“The council finds that there is no benefit in anyone having the debate.
“Should it be allowed, more fights and accusations will take place and this is not good for the Barisan Nasional leadership, especially the Malay community in the country,” he said.
Abu Hassan, who helmed the state from 1997 to 2000 before resigning over a scandal involving his sister-in-law, was talking to reporters after a 1Malaysia breakfast with over a hundred people here yesterday.
The event was jointly organised by 12 Selangor non-governmental groups.
The permit for the debate between the former prime minister and the Tourism and Culture Minister, which was earlier allowed for April 7 at Karangkraf’s headquarters in Shah Alam, was revoked by police on Saturday.
It was reported that Mukhriz, the former Kedah mentri besar and now Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president, had accepted a challenge from his ex-aide Haris Che Mat to a debate on April 1 over his wealth.
However, this has since been postponed.
Abu Hassan said the recent and ongoing power struggles and leadership crisis within the opposition parties had given a good opportunity for Barisan leaders to prove their worth.
