IPOH: A 30-year-old mechanic was jailed 15 years by the High Court here for causing the death of his lover’s husband during a violent confrontation two years ago.
N. Ravi Kumar (pic), who was initially accused with murdering N. Rajendhran, 50, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of committing culpable homicide.
He admitted committing the offence at a house at B-1, Kampung Deralik in Sitiawan at midnight on Feb 4, 2012.
Justice Lee Swee Seng said he had taken into account that Ravi Kumar was first attacked by Rajendhran and that he had sustained injuries before the subsequent fight.
Ravi Kumar, he said, could have run from the crime scene when he disabled Rajendhran but did not.
“This is a public interest case but I also take into account that you are a first-time offender,” he said before sentencing him to jail from the date of his arrest on Feb 13, 2012.
Police found Rajendhran’s body naked and covered in blood in the living room, with injuries to his arm, back and ear while one of his leg and a left thumb were found on the bed in another room.
Further investigation revealed that Rajendhran had earlier asked his wife S. Hemala, 30, to arrange a meeting with Ravi Kumar to discuss their affair.
When Hemala opened the door to let Ravi Kumar in that night, she saw him carrying a parang.
She then entered the bedroom to wake her husband up, who upon realising that Ravi Kumar was standing before him, took out a parang from under his pillow and slashed him.
This then led to the fight, during which Ravi Kumar started slashing Rajendhran before dragging him into the living room.
Ravi Kumar’s counsel R. N. Terence Naidu said Hemala had often confided in him about her marital problems.
“The deceased was known to be an abusive person as his wife showed my client her old scars,” he said, adding that Hemala’s first husband had also been murdered.
