Star-studded Johor Darul Takzim tasted success in Kuching when they were crowned as the new Super League champions with a 1-0 win over Sarawak in their final match of the season and earn themselves a place in next year’s AFC Champions League play-offs.
The Southern Tiger’s Argentine connection made it count when Pereyra Diaz netted the all important winner in the 66th minute after being set up by Luciano Figueroa.
It was a win JDT needed to take the title from their closest rivals Selangor who were held to a 2-2 draw by relegated PKNS FC at the Shah Alam Stadium.
Last year Selangor pipped JDT to second place and a place in the AFC Cup on goal difference.
With the three points in Kuching, JDT finished on top with 44 points while Selangor had to play the bridesmaid this time round with 41 points.
Newly crowned FA Cup champions Pahang slumped to a surprise 3-0 defeat to Perak in Ipoh in despite of the loss finished with a respectable 37 points from 22 matches played.
Terengganu, who surprised Kelantan with a come from behind 3-2 win in Kota Baru, finished fourth on 36 points.
The relegation battle was equally intense. Perak who had stunned last year’s league champions Lions XII 2-0 at the Jalan Besar Stadium to throw themselves a lifeline, once again showed tremendous fighting spirit to secure full points against Pahang to keep their place in the Super League.
Armed Forces, ravaged by injuries throughout the season, also survived with a 1-1 draw against Sime Darby to stay put in the Super League.
However, T-Team will begin new life in the second tier Premier League after a 1-0 defeat to Lions XII in Kuala Terengganu.
