KUALA TERENGGANU: "I am no Robin Hood," stressed Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, who did not wish to be compared to the heroic outlaw in English folklore.
The labelling came following Ahmad's action of stopping two lorries carrying Gardenia bread in Chendor, Pahang for the bread to be distributed to hungry stranded flood victims in Kemaman recently.
Ahmad said although Robin Hood was known for robbing the rich and giving to the poor, his action was still wrong.
"What is wrong is still wrong, and right is right...so there's no need to liken me to Robin Hood," he said during the winding-up session at the state assembly sitting here today.
Ahmad's action on Dec 4 during the floods won him a lot of praise after the news went viral on Facebook and several blogs which called him Robin Hood.
"Imagine, many of the flood victims came to me to say that their children were crying as they were hungry when the families were stranded after the Kemaman-Kuantan road was closed to traffic as a result of being inundated by flood waters.
"Initially, the lorry drivers refused to open the lorries but when I contacted their manager to say that I was prepared to pay for all the bread, the lorry drivers relented, witnessed by the public," he said.
Ahmad also showed to the state assembly, a letter from the Gardenia (Gardenia Bakeries Sdn Bhd) head office which informed that the company did not want to give an invoice for the cost of the bread.
Instead, the company's management regarded the bread as their contribution to the flood victims, he said.-- BERNAMA
