Two Mamak Gang members among four detained
PETALING JAYA: Police detained four suspects who were in the midst of carrying out a robbery in front of a pharmacy in Bandar Pinggiran Subang at about 5.35am on Thursday.
Two of the suspects are believed to be brothers linked to the original notorious Mamak Gang.
The suspects were in the midst of robbing the pharmacy when a police CID taskforce swooped in and thwarted their attempt.
Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Junaidi Bujang said the pharmacy’s owner alerted the police when the shop's alarm was triggered after robbers smashed the front window and dismantled the front door’s lock.
“Three suspects were waiting in the car while another was waiting in front of the pharmacy when policemen arrived.
“They tried to flee but we managed to cordon off the area to prevent their escape,” he said when contacted.
He added that police recovered 35 tins of powdered milk, 18 boxes of vitamins, 12 bottles of medicated oil from the suspects’ vehicle.
“We also seized three axes, a hammer, a cutter, a machete, a saw and three ski masks.
“We believe the suspects were responsible for other similar break-ins and robberies in the area,” he said.
The Mamak Gang, which is believed to date back to the mid 1980s, was responsible for a spate of robberies and highway heists, and are most notable for the RM12 million Subang airport gold bar heist in August 1994.
