LAHAD DATU: A drug dealer was shot dead after trying to ram into the police and trying to escape from an Op Tapis inspection in an incident on the roadside of the Palm Oil Cluster Industrial Area (POIC) Phase 2 here on Saturday.

In the incident at about 11.45 in the morning, the 28-year-old suspect driving a Perodua Viva was also carrying 7.45 grams of syabu and a samurai sword.

Lahad Datu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Rohan Shah Ahmad said, a team of police officers from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division had to open fire in self-defense after being hit by the suspect during the operation.

"Acting on information about drug trafficking activities, when a police team was about to stop a car the suspect was riding in, the suspect suddenly backed his vehicle aggressively and crashed into one of the policemen.

"The suspect also made a 'u-turn' before accelerating his vehicle in a movement against the current and crashed into another member of the raid who tried to stop the suspect, but at the same time, the member involved managed to fire at the suspect to defend himself before being hit," he said in a statement on Sunday.

He said again, the suspect then tried to accelerate his vehicle to escape, but crashed at a distance of 400 meters from the scene of the incident.

"Further examination found that the suspect was unconscious before being confirmed dead by medical officers.

"Further checks revealed that the suspect has five previous criminal records involving various narcotics offenses and is a wanted person for a commercial crime case and the results of the investigation also revealed syabu worth RM1,490 and a samurai was also confiscated," he said.

Rohan Shah said the case was investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for distributing syabu.
