PETALING JAYA: Police have reclassified the case of Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who succumbed to his injuries after being allegedly attacked by a mob during last month’s Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots, as murder.

Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said Muhammad Adib's death has been reclassified from attempted murder to murder.

“Police have reclassified the case from Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder to Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder,” he said in a statement.

Muhammad Adib, 24, passed away at 9.41pm at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Monday (Dec 17).

On Sunday (Dec 16), IJN said that Muhammad Adib’s condition was critical after suffering progressive deterioration of his lung and kidney function over the past 24 hours.

He had suffered from fractured ribs and internal injuries, and was earlier treated at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) before being transferred to the IJN.

His remains will be brought back to his hometown in Kampung Tebengau, Kedah, after final rites and prayers are conducted at IJN on Monday night.

His burial is expected to take place after Zohor prayers on Tuesday (Dec 18).
