SANDAKAN: A businessman was arrested at Sandakan airport here yesterday after he claimed to have a bomb.

The incident occurred at a business class check-in counter at 1pm, when the 42-year-old man was asked by airport staff about the content of his luggage.

The man, originally from Shah Alam, initially replied that his bag contained dry food.

However, upon weighing, the bag was found to be far too heavy to contain what the man had claimed.

Staff members repeated their question to the businessman several times, before he suddenly said that his bag contained a bomb.

District police were quickly alerted to the situation and a bomb disposal unit was despatched to the scene.

“After inspection, the bag was found not to contain any bomb (but) it was seized for further action.

"The businessman was probably annoyed when repeatedly asked about the content of his luggage.

“However, he should not make jokes on the matter,” Sabah Police commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said when contacted.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. © New Straits Times Press
