PETALING JAYA, Jan 24 — Selangor police will conduct a routine sweep to clear ‘unwelcome elements’ before Thaipusam celebrations next week.

Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said an operation named ‘Ops Bersih’ will be executed soon to ensure no issues such as gangsters fighting for parking turf that previously spoilt celebrations, take place again.

“This includes acting proactively to ensure no disturbance during the festival from gangsters or any other criminal elements,” he said after a launching ceremony of a crime prevention club at Dewan Sivik today.

He also reminded participants to obey traffic rules and follow instructions of traffic personnel stationed at the festival grounds on that day.

Mazlan said so far there were no untoward incidents reported near the festival grounds presently.

On Tuesday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun in a statement said security will be heightened at all locations nationwide where Thaipusam will be celebrated.

He urged visitors to give their full cooperation to the authorities to ensure the celebration on Jan 31 takes place smoothly without any violation of laws and regulations.
