The new contestants on singing competition Bintang RTM 2018 performed for members of the media during an the event launch in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 25.
Sixteen hopefuls from all over the country belted songs like Hael Husaini’s Jampi and Clean Bandit’s Symphony.
Perhaps, due to first-time jitters, most of the performances were shaky. Some couldn’t hit the high notes and then there were those who seemed lost in all the frenzy.
Award-winning singer Adibah Noor, who is going to be a judge on the show alongside Hujan guitarist AG Coco, was not impressed.
It didn’t take long for Adibah to express her dismay: “I must say I was disappointed with all the performances today. There is a lot of room for improvement. I’m really surprised because they had performed well during the bootcamp and training sessions.”
One of the contestants, Ferona Paimin, 21, from Sabah knew that Adibah was not going to be happy with their performances.
“We didn’t have time to rehearse for the performance today. But I know that’s not a good excuse. We should learn to be ready at the drop of the hat,” she said.
Her fellow contestant, 23-year-old Yasmin from Pahang agreed: “We’ll take Adibah’s comments and use it to motivate ourselves to continue improving.”

Search For Next Sudirman

Bintang RTM 2018 aims to find the next singing sensation.
In the past, the show has produced big names like the late Datuk Sudirman Arshad back in 1976 and Datuk Jamal Abdillah in 1979. Other notable contestants include Misha Omar and Sarah Raisuddin, both finalists in 2001.
“The show is about equipping our contestants with elements they need to become great performers. They will go into the entertainment industry with knowledge from vocal classes and dance lessons. They will also receive showmanship tips,” producer Sarena Mohd Salleh shared.
Rocker Datuk Awie, singer Syafinaz Selamat and dancer Alam from group Wakaka are the industry talents who have signed on to coach the contestants.
Every week, the contestants will perform songs based on a given theme. They will be reviewed by the juries and the person with the lowest score is eliminated. In the end, only five contestants are selected for the finale where they will compete for the title of Bintang RTM 2018 and walk away with lucrative prizes.
“The benchmark for our contestants is to be an all-rounded performer like Sudirman,” Sarena said.

Judge Adibah Noor Will Not Sugarcoat Her Comments

Well, they’ll have to get through Adibah first. She’s looking for a performer who has good vocals and consistent in his/her delivery.
She believes that hard work and mental strength will give the contestants the edge they need to survive the competition.
“I want the contestants to know the truth. I won’t be sugarcoating things for them. I’ve been monitoring them from the bootcamp sessions at Bukit Gambang in Pahang and I would like them to be better,” she said.
She added: “I also hope to see better attitudes from the contestants because it looks like some of them have already given up on the competition. The reality about the industry is different from the extravagant lifestyle some celebrities are flaunting on social media these days. They have to know that the journey ahead is going to be very difficult.”
The first episode of Bintang RTM 2018, to be aired on Jan 27 at 8.30pm on TV2, will see four contestants eliminated.
Nurul Jannah, 19, from Selangor, is nervous but will not let it show when she performs.
“I believe in my talent and I can’t wait to show everyone what I’m capable off,” she said.

Bintang RTM 2018 airs every Saturday on TV2 at 8.30pm.
