You don’t need to be a parent, a kindergarten teacher or a baby sitter to know this song. It can be easily found on your Facebook newsfeed, your Twitter timeline, or worse, you’ll even have an annoying colleague singing the song and trying to get you to do it too. But this song isn’t something you’ll normally hear on the airwaves.

What song are we talking about? It’s the stupidly infectious Baby Shark song!

In case you’ve been out of the loop, here’s the song. (Warning: It’s really, really contagious).

The song has raked in a whopping 871 million views (and counting) (UPDATED) on YouTube alone and it is spreading like wildfire in Southeast Asia.

So, who on Earth is responsible for this super-catchy song that even the adults are digging it?

The song is produced by Pinkfong, a Korean education startup. The company credits the success of their songs thanks to K-Pop megastars such as Girls' GenerationRed Velvet, and Blank Pink who have previously covered their songs and even performed the dance steps on TV and at their concerts, as reported by Forbes.

Don't believe us? Watch this clip below:

Apart from K-Pop stars, we know you have a few non-parent friends who are also guilty of making covers of this song.

Well, who would’ve thought a song about a shark’s family tree would turn out to be Korea’s biggest thing since "Gangnam Style"?

The ‘Baby Shark’ series has been around for some time (since 2015 to be precise) and it became Pinkfong’s most popular series to date with a total of 800 million views worldwide!

In case you’re wondering, yes, they do produce similar tunes using other animals. The song is titled ‘Monkey Banana’ and it is sung to the same tune of ‘Baby Shark’, but instead of saying “doo doo doo doo doo”, you’ll have to replace it with “ba na na na”.

So, how did it go viral?

Well, we think the great success of the song can be attributed to a few factors.

Firstly, the lyrics are straight-up simple and easy to remember. Even a three-year-old kid can sing it by heart.

Secondly, almost everyone knows the secret formula of making a hit song – repetition. Repeat the lyrics with some ultra-catchy phrases and BAM! The next thing you know, world domination.
The 'doo doo doo' part is the best part!

And to add some extra flair to it, the creators decided to throw in some dance moves to compliment the song. (Don’t lie ah, we know you hafal all the dance steps).

So, what do you reckon is the next viral song? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
