PETALING JAYA, Jan 20 ― Police have confirmed the driver who drove against traffic on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) near Taman Dato Harun yesterday was senile.
Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said the 76-year-old suspect from Kuala Lumpur, who used to work as a small-time contractor, was brought to the district Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department around 8pm yesterday.
“He is known to suffer from hearing difficulties and often lost his way whenever he leaves the house,” he said.
Mohd Zani said police have also taken the statements of the suspect and two of his sons at the police station.
He said the suspect was released on police bail at 10.45pm and investigations were ongoing.
In a five-minute long clip that has gone viral, the driver of the car can be seen ignoring other motorists and even NPE patrol personnel who repeatedly asked him to use the correct lane.
The footage ended when patrol personnel finally managed to get the driver to bring his vehicle to a stop, while shouting and knocking on the driver’s side window.
