KUANTAN: A managing director of a private college alleged to have taken bribes from 20 college students was released from remand today.

Magistrate Humairah KM Haider ordered the 53-year-old to be released on the expiry of his remand which began on Saturday.

After remand proceedings, the suspect's counsel Datuk Ng See Teong confirmed that his client was released on a RM7,000 bail.

On why the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had sought the remand against the suspect in the first place, Ng said the commission had told the court that they needed time to find important documentary evidence.

"The MACC had also said that they needed to trace the 20 witnesses, some of them in Malaysia and others abroad.

"The witnesses are students of the same private college (where the suspect worked)," he said.

It was reported that the man had allegedly received RM2,500 in bribes from each student so that he would issue certificates that allowed them to pursue medical studies abroad.

On whether his client would be charged at a later date, Ng said MACC would let him know if they intend to do so.

"MACC will inform me on the status of investigation and whether they would proceed with charging (in court)," he said.

The suspect was picked up by MACC at Bandar Pusat Jengka in Maran last Friday.

On Saturday morning, he was brought to the Kuantan Courts Complex here where the magistrate's court issued the remand order against him.

The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which provides a jail term of up to 20 years or five times the value of the amount solicited, whichever is higher.
