BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man was stabbed during a botched robbery in front of the Jaya Gading supermarket here this afternoon. The 40-year-old victim, known only as Ooi, was stabbed on his left chest, his back as well as left shoulder when he attempted to put up a fight. Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Ashan Nik Abdul Hamid said the incident was witnessed by several people, who immediately alerted the police. He said members of the public managed to nab the 19-year-old suspect before handing him over to the police.

He said a couple witnessed the incident when they were on their way to the supermarket about 5.50pm. “They claimed they saw the suspect chasing the victim until the nearby food court before injuring him. “The victim shouted for help in the food court and several people came to his aid. “They then apprehended and tied the suspect up,” he said. The couple also managed to record the incident on their mobile phones. Nik Ros Ashan said the victim was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment. “From initial observation, he was stabbed five times but is reported to be in stable condition,” he added. Police managed to retrieve a knife inside the suspect’s jacket. The case is investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery. ©
