PETALING JAYA: Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican is "deeply saddened" by the death of medical student Soh Zhi Min (pic) in Britain.
Reezal, who heads the Umno overseas' students bureau (BPLN), said this in a statement on Soh's death on the bureau's Facebook page.
"Zhi Min was a JPA scholar who was pursuing her fourth year in Medicine at the University of Edinburgh," he said on Saturday afternoon.
According to the statement, the Foreign Ministry and the Malaysian High Commission in London are communicating with Soh's family to render the necessary assistance and support.
"My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends for their loss. I have also personally contacted her mother to express my deepest condolences, and to assure her family that we will assist to the best extent possible during this difficult time," he added.
On Saturday evening, BLPN executive chief coordinator Ibdilillah Ishak visited Soh's family on Reezal's behalf.
He spent an hour talking with Soh's mother, Ho Chai Suan, and the rest of her family members at the family home in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong.
Soh was killed in Scotland after she was hit by a bus when her bicycle wheel got trapped in a tram track on Wednesday morning.
She was taken to the Royal Infirmary for treatment after the incident but died a short time after.
Following confirmation of her identity on Thursday, officials from the Malaysian High Commission in London met with representatives from Edinburgh University and local police over the incident.
