KOTA KINABALU: A family in the southwest district of Bongawan, about 72km from here, can now sleep easier after a 5m python was caught near their house late Thursday.
“It’s good to know that the snake is no longer there and we can celebrate Hari Raya more safely, especially when there are small children at the house,” said school canteen worker Mohd Riduan Salapar, 27.
He said the family first spotted the snake in a swampy area near their house in Kampung Biau about three days ago.
“When my sister-in-law saw it on Thursday, its head was just above the water and it was not moving. She thought it was a monitor lizard,” he added.
Mohd Riduan said he called the 999 emergency line at about 10pm on Thursday and three Civil Defence personnel arrived at the scene at about 10.50pm.
They managed to catch the 36kg python 10 minutes later.
The snake was released at another location.
