KUALA LUMPUR: An online forex trader was jailed a day and fined RM4,000 by the Sessions Court here for uploading offensive words that hit out against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Judge Zaman Mohd Noor meted out the sentence on Mohd Nasaruddin Saron, 41, after he admitted to the charge of uploading offensive words by making accusations targeting at and calling Najib names on his Facebook account.
Nasaruddin pleaded guilty to having intentionally uploaded the posting with intent to offend others via the Facebook profile Nasaruddin Saron at about 7.25am on Oct 26 last year.
Nasaruddin had committed the offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act at Level 11, Menara A, Pandan Kapital, Jalan Pandan Utama, Pandan Indah in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission head of prosecution Mohd Sophian Zakaria said Nasaruddin should not have posted the offensive words which insulted the premier.
He asked for a jail sentence and fine to serve as a deterrent to Nasaruddin and others.
Nasaruddin, in asking for leniency, said he was a first-time offender.
