Two killed by lorry running a red light
KAJANG: Two men, one of them disabled, perished when the Perodua Viva they were travelling in collided with a lorry that was allegedly running a red light in Taman Pelangi, Semenyih here.
Izzaq Syameer Ifwan Suhaimi, 26, was sitting in the front passenger seat while Sha'ari Nuruddin, 63, was in the back seat when the accident occurred at a traffic light junction at about 10.45am Tuesday.
Driver Nur Irene Ashweena Suhaimi, 24, was seriously injured. Her brother Izzaq Syameer was disabled, but no further information was available.
Semenyih Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Shairulnizam Wailie said six firefighters arrived at the scene at around 10.50am to extricate the victims from the badly damaged Viva.
He said the two men were pronounced dead by medical personnel from the Beranang Health Clinic.
Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Othman Nanyan said police had recorded the statement of a passerby who had witnessed the lorry running the red light.
“The lorry did not stop when the light turned red and crashed into a Viva coming from the opposite direction.
“The Viva driver was making a turn after the traffic light turned green on her side of the road,” he said.
ACP Othman said the lorry driver was nowhere near the scene when authorities arrived, although he had left behind his vehicle.
A witness said that he had gone to a police station to lodge a report on the accident.
The bodies were brought to Hospital Serdang for a postmortem.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
