KUALA LUMPUR: A receptionist for a five-star hotel was jailed for 13 years and ordered to be whipped twice by the Sessions Court here for raping an Australian tourist two years ago.

Sessions judge M. Kunasundary handed down the decision Monday, saying the defence had failed to prove reasonable doubt in the case against Roaquin Radzmund Muhammed Reduan, 27.

She ruled that as a hotel receptionist, the accused carried a heavy responsibility entrusted to him by his employer but he instead committed a despicable crime.

"I hope the sentence will serve as a lesson to you so that you will not act as you please. Your wild lust made the victim suffer mentally and physically," she said in her ruling.

She instructed that the sentence run from the day the accused was arrested on Sept 22 this year.

Roaquin Radzmund was accused of raping the 29-year-old woman in a room in a five-star hotel in Jalan Imbi here at about 5am on Oct 19, 2014 and charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, DPP Liyana Zawani Mohd Radzi urged the court to mete out a deterrent sentence as it was a serious offence.

She said it was "a well-planned crime" as Roaquin Radzmund had carried the victim, who was intoxicated, from a car to her hotel room.

"The accused raped the victim who had just come back from her friend's wedding reception.

"He had also duplicated her room key," she said.

In asking for leniency, Roaquin Radzmund's counsel James Khong said his client was the second child of four siblings and was the sole breadwinner, adding that he also had to support his father who had suffered a stroke.
