KUALA LUMPUR: The driver of the car that crashed into a police car has claimed trial, after footage of the accident went viral on the Internet.
Lua Norman, 21, pleaded not guilty to drunk driving, which led him to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a police patrol vehicle, injuring officers Nor Alhayari Buyong, 58, and Zainal Abu Bee Din, 50.
Lua is accused of driving a blue Volkswagen Polo at the time.
The alleged offence occurred at 8.55am on June 22, on Jalan Pudu heading into the city centre.
A video on YouTube uploaded Wednesday shows a similar car hitting the back of a police car, and pushing it from the left lane to the road barrier.
The policeman are seen exiting their vehicle, one carrying a machine gun. However, the blue Volkswagen flees the scene.
The video titled "Police Car hit by Volksvagon Polo @ Tunnel near Old Pudu Jail" has over 105,000 views, as of Friday morning.
Lua's lawyer Mohd Khairani Samsi informed the Court that his client was considering taking a plea bargain.
The youth faces up to 10 years prison and an RM20,000 fine, if convicted under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Mohd Khairani pleaded for lower bail, saying Lua was about to start his degree programme in an American university.
Prosecuting officer Assistant Supt Nom Phot Prackdit offered bail at RM10,000.
Magistrate Zura Syazween Hamizan granted RM4,000 bail with one surety, and temporarily suspended Lua's driving license.
