Abdul Hadi Retains PAS Presidency

KUALA SELANGOR, June 4 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang retained his post as PAS president in the party election Thursday.

The election results were announced by the chairman of the PAS Election Committee, Asmuni Awi, at 10.15 pm in the night.

Abdul Hadi, 68, from the pro-ulama group, received 928 votes, beating former PAS vice-president Ahmad Awang, 79, who only polled 233 votes.

A total of 1,189 delegates cast their votes at the election in conjunction with the 61st PAS central annual assembly held at the Indoor Stadium, Kuala Selangor.

Abdul Hadi, who has held the post for 13 years since taking over from the former president, the late Datuk Dr Fadzil Noor in 2002, will lead the party for another two years until 2017.

The victory will make Abdul Hadi as the longest serving PAS president.

As at 10.40 pm, only the result for the president had been announced while counting for the ballots for the other posts was still going on.
