MAS flight makes emergency landing in Melbourne due to engine fire

    PETALING JAYA: A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) plane bound for Kuala Lumpur made an emergency landing in Melbourne, Australia shortly after take-off on Friday due to an engine fire.
    Aircraft tracking app FlightRadar reported a fire in Flight MH148’s starboard engine.
    It is learnt that emergency response units were called to the airport at around 2.20pm local time.
    Melbourne Airport has said that the aircraft landed safely.
    “All operations at the Melbourne Airport continue as normal,” it said in a post on Facebook.
    MAS also confirmed the incident in a tweet.
    “MH148 MEL-KUL made an air-turn back and landed uneventfully. The aircraft is being grounded for investigation. More details to follow,” it said.
    The airline later said that the Airbus 330 was being inspected by MAS engineers and ground personnel in Melbourne.
    “MH148 has 300 passengers on-board and passengers are being disembarked. Preliminary inspection reveals no physical evidence of fire externally, and further assessment is underway.
    “Safety is of the utmost importance to Malaysia Airlines,” it said.
