PETALING JAYA: The government has been paying private company Spanco Sdn Bhd RM221.66mil annually to rent 10,963 Proton cars for official use.
The Finance Ministry told Parliament that seven models of Proton cars are being rented every month at a price of between RM973.84 and RM3,288.84 per model, totalling RM18.47mil for monthly car rentals.
“The total number of official vehicles rented by the Government at present is 10,693 units.
“The vehicles consist of various Proton models, including the Perdana Executive 2.4, Perdana Standard 2.0, Inspira 2.0, Persona, Preve, Waja and Saga,” the ministry said in a written reply to Teo Kok Seong (DAP-Rasah), dated June 10.
Teo had asked the Government to state the number of official vehicles and the models rented since 1993, as well as the monthly rent incurred for each model.
From the breakdown, 486 units of the Perdana Executive 2.4 were rented monthly at a cost of RM3,284.84 per car, while 709 units of the Perdana Standard 2.0 cost RM2,892.32 a car.
The Preve, Proton’s most recent sedan offering, racked up the most in rentals with 3,518 units costing RM1,572.77 each, which totals to a monthly payment of RM5.53mil.
A total of 1,061 Proton Saga were rented at RM973.84 per car, while 2,466 units of the Waja cost 1,296.85 per car, each month.
The other models were the Inspira 2.0 (2,127 units for RM2,147.68 each), and the Persona (442 units for RM1,114.66 each).
Spanco has a 25-year agreement with the government to supply, maintain, and repair all the cars leased by the government.
Its contract expires at the end of 2018.
