Having once been a forbidding maximum-security penitentiary, Alcatraz is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is this year’s #8 Travelers’ Choice Landmark. The roster of former Alcatraz inmates includes A-list criminals such as crime boss Al Capone and kidnapper George Kelly. Though it was considered escape-proof, in 1962 the Anglin brothers and Frank Morris infamously floated away on a makeshift raft and were never seen again.

Next door to Bangkok's Grand Palace you’ll find Wat Pho, home to an enormous reclining Buddha, the largest in Thailand. The Reclining Buddha, #21 on the Travelers’ Choice 2015 Landmark list, was crafted to celebrate King Rama III’s restoration in the 19th century. At 150 feet (46 meters) long and 49 feet (15 meters) high, it is decorated with gold leaf, while Buddha's eyes and foot soles are inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
