Archbishop Murphy Pakiam retires, Pope accepts resignation
KUALA LUMPUR: The city's Archbishop Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam has retired, as prescribed by Canon Law which requires him to resign at the age of 75.
According to a post on the Vatican's Fides News Agency website on Friday, Pope Francis accepted Pakiam's resignation in accordance with can. 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law.
Pakiam, the third Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, succeeded Archbishop Rev Soter Fernandez on May 24, 2003.
He turned 75 on Dec 6, and has yet to name a successor.
Pakiam filed for a judicial review in 2007 after the Home Ministry barred the Catholic Church's newsletter, Herald, from using the word Allah in its Bahasa Malaysia publication.
