PETALING JAYA: A freak thunderstorm and strong winds wreaked havoc in SS7 here, uprooting and snapping branches of some 120 trees, some as old as 20 years.
The storm, that occurred around 5.30pm Thursday, uprooted many trees along Jalan SS7/6 and Jalan SS7/1.
A spokesman from the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ), Siti Mariam Muar said that the uprooted trees, mostly Jejawi and Semarak trees, blocked several roads in the area causing minor traffic jams near the Kelana Jaya Stadium area.
“We had to close several roads in the area to remove the trees,” she said when contacted.
She added that the uprooted trees also caused damage to road signs and street lamps.
“Some of the street lamps also had to be shut off as power lines were damaged,” said Siti Mariam.
When contacted, a spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) said that there were no casualties during the storm.
