Cops foil bid to sell abducted baby
GEORGE TOWN: Police have foiled an attempt to sell a seven-month-old baby girl within 24 hours from the time she was kidnapped from her grandmother’s house in Paya Terubong here.
A team from the George Town district police headquarters rescued the baby from a house in Balik Pulau following a tip-off at noon yesterday.
They also detained a 60-year-old man who allegedly paid RM3,000 for the baby to assist in investigations.
Two women, one of whom was said to be the baby’s grandmother’s friend and former housemate, had gone to her house at 3.30pm on Thursday and taken the baby out on the pretext of going for a stroll.
When they failed to return after half an hour, the 54-year-old grandmother tried to contact them but to no avail. She then lodged a missing person’s report.
The baby was reunited with her sobbing mother Syamsuhaini Samsuddin, 33, at the district police station in Patani Road here about 1.30pm yesterday.
“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) that my daughter was found safe and sound,” said Syamsuhaini.
“I was shocked and almost went insane when I received a call from my husband, telling me that our daughter was kidnapped by two women.”
She said she had dropped her daughter at her mother’s house before leaving for work on Wednesday morning.
Penang CID Chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah said police are now looking for former security guard Zuzita Ahmad, 43, to assist in investigations. Her last known address was 214-B, Jalan Tanjung Tokong.
Those with any information on her whereabouts should contact the nearest police station.
