KUALA LUMPUR: At Astro, every story, whether it’s a gripping sports final, a heartfelt local drama, or a blockbuster hit, represents months, sometimes years, of dedication. But piracy puts all that effort at risk.
It’s more than just lost revenue; it’s lost opportunities, lost jobs, and lost futures for those who create the content audiences love.
As such, in the first half of FY25, Astro sharpened its focus on combating digital piracy, achieving key victories that protect the content ecosystem.
Through legal action and collaboration with enforcement agencies, the company recorded a total action value of RM808,927.20 against digital piracy through a combination of fines, settlements, and prosecution of sellers of illegal streaming devices (ISD), and legitimate subscription gains.
“Piracy isn’t just a business challenge; it’s a threat to creativity itself,” said Astro Group CEO, Euan Daryl Smith. “When people steal content, they don’t just take what isn’t theirs - they pilfer from the actors, directors, cameramen and small businesses behind every production.”
Astro’s battle against piracy is fought on multiple fronts.
In partnership with Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission, Royal Malaysian Police, and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the company is dismantling piracy networks, shutting down illegal broadcasts, and pursuing those who profit from piracy.
Astro’s anti-piracy mission, however, extends beyond enforcement. The company believes that educating consumers is just as important as legal action.
“Illegal streaming sites and apps aren’t just about providing free or cheap content - they’re traps. They open doors to malware, ransomware and phishing schemes, putting users' privacy and security on the line,” Euan explained.
“Each time viewers choose legal platforms, they invest in the future of the media industry, ensuring creators get their dues and audiences can enjoy content without worry,” he continued.
“Every legitimate subscription counts. It strengthens the creative ecosystem, nurtures talent, and keeps the stories flowing,” Euan remarked.
To showcase these efforts and results, Astro has compiled a mid-year report card detailing a comprehensive breakdown of its anti-piracy victories.
The report offers an inside look at the numbers, the partnerships driving success, and the hidden risks consumers face from illegal streaming.
This isn’t just a summary - it’s a story of progress, perseverance, and purpose. Readers are invited to explore the full report to discover how Astro is setting new benchmarks in protecting creativity.
Astro is not slowing down. These early victories in FY25 are just the beginning of a longer journey - one where the stakes are high, but the rewards are worth it.
“Together, we can build a future where creativity thrives and audiences never have to second guess what’s behind the platforms they use,” Euan said.
