Floods in Kuantan worsens as rain continues to pour

KUANTAN: The state capital city is seeing an onset of a flood situation as torrential rain continues to pour.
According to the state police on Monday, several roads in Kuantan had been inundated making it inaccessible to light vehicles.
The roads are KM28 of Jalan Sungai Lembing, Batu 3 of Jalan Kuantan-Gambang, the junction in front of Wisma Belia below the Kuantan Bypass flyover, the road in front of the fire station at Jalan Bukit Ubi, the road in front of the Chemistry Department at Jalan Tok Sira and the Bukit Setongkol bypass heading towards the Giant hypermarket.
The police advised members of the public to be prepared to face any eventuality and follow the direction of the authorities if evacuation orders are given.
Meanwhile, 75 people had been evacuated in Rompin as floodwater continues to rise.
The National Security Council reported that 23 people had been evacuated to the Lintang public hall and Kampung Perpat surau, 11 to the Telok Gading hall, 25 to the Kampung Bukit Lepas surau, eight to the Simpang Sepayang public hall and another eight to SK Pianggu.
Flash floods in Mersing and Segamat, villagers moved to relief centres
JOHOR BARU: Residents from five villages in Mersing and Segamat have been shifted to temporary flood relief centres following flash floods in the area.
Johor Security Council acting secretary Azura Mohd Kifli said that several relief centres have been opened for villagers from Kampung Air Tawar, Tenglu Besar, Kampung Semaloi, Kampung Air Papan in Mersing and Kampung Sungai Gatom in Labis, Segamat.
“The water levels along Sungai Muar have also exceeded the danger levels and is currently at 8.86metres,” she said when contacted.
Azura added that the villagers from the effected areas were being relocated in stages to the nearest relief centres for their own safety.
“We are also keeping close tabs on areas in Johor Baru, Batu Pahat and Kluang and urge residents there to be prepared for floods,” she said.
She also added that the Mersing – Kota Tinggi road has been temporarily closed off to small vehicles due to floods.
Meanwhile, state welfare department director Khatijah Abdullah confirmed that a total of 108 victims have been relocated to relief centres in Mersing.
“Mersing is the hardest hit at the moment and three relief centres have been opened there,” she said adding that welfare department officials were assisting with the relocation of victims and urged residents to cooperate with the authorities.
