GEORGE TOWN, April 27 -- A mechanic died when a tree fell on the Proton Wira he was driving along Jalan Perak, here, today.
Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station operations officer A’azelan Hassan said the man, Yong Geeng Huei, 53, died at the scene due to severe head and body injuries, in the incident at about 9.30 am.
"The fire station received a call at 9.38 am before rushing to the scene to find a tree, measuring two metres in circumference, had crushed a car with a man stuck in the driver's seat.
"We had difficulty extricating the driver because of the huge tree branches, and we first needed to do some cutting (of the branches) with the help of the Penang City Council, the Civil Defence Force and the Volunteer Fire Brigade," he said when contacted.
He said the man's body was removed at 11.15 am and sent to the Penang Hospital for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, Northeast district police chief ACP Soffian Santong when contacted confirmed that his department had received a report regarding the incident.
