PETALING JAYA: A couple and a Zimbabwe national were injured when they were hit by fireworks during a spat between two Mat Rempit gangs outside the Luther Centre church here early today.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said the incident happened not long after a prayer session to welcome the New Year at the church ended.

“A priest, in his 50s, who alerted police on the incident, said he heard a loud explosion when people started leaving the church at 12.45am.

“He rushed to the scene and found a couple, aged 48 and 45, who sustained injuries on their backs and eyebrows as well as a 25-year-old Zimbabwean student who suffered burns on his forehead, after being struck the fireworks’ debris,” he said.

“The incident was believed to be related to a clash between two Mat Rempit groups outside the church.

“We have ruled out sabotage. We found that two explosives have been thrown during the spat; one landed and exploded on the road shoulder while another ended up at the church entrance.

“This was between the two groups and had nothing to do with religious issue,” he said.

He said witnesses were unable to give a clear picture of what had transpired because the area was dark.

“We will get the closed-circuit television footage along the stretch to facilitate investigations.” he added.

Zani urged those with information to contact Petaling Jaya police headquarters at 03-9766 2222. © New Straits Times Press
