Tengku Adnan says supreme council is the party’s highest decision-making body in the absence of the party general assembly

PETALING JAYA: Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (pic) says that issues relating to the suspension of former party deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should be settled within the party and not externally.
“Clause 12.9 of the Umno constitution relates to the removal of any supreme council member from their position in the council. It is different from the suspension of Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s post,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
“The suspension of Tan Sri Muhyiddin was carried out under the supreme council’s existing and residual powers, stipulated in Clause 10.15 of the party constitution. It was made for the betterment of the party,” Tengku Adnan, who is also Federal Territories minister, said.
Explaining that the supreme council was the party’s highest decision-making body in the absence of the party general assembly as stated in Clause 9.1, Tengku Adnan said that whatever decision arrived at by the supreme council would be announced to the general assembly at the appropriate time.
“According to Section 18C of the Societies Act 1966, disputes or decisions made by the party cannot be challenged in court. While Section 16 of the Societies Act regarding disputes among or between members is not covered in the case of Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s suspension,” he said.
“The proper channel to be taken should be within the party,” he said.
In a press conference earlier Thursday, Muhyiddin said that he would send a letter to the Registrar of Societies to clarify his suspension.
He is enquiring if his suspension as Umno deputy president was done in accordance with the party’s constitution.
