House breaking equipment that were found in the suspects' car
BINTULU: Police shot dead four men who were high on the wanted list for armed robberies at an oil palm plantation on Friday.
The 1am incident at Km 42 of the Bintulu-Miri route occurred after three police cars had chased the suspects' car from Bintulu town.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman said serious crimes policemen found the four behaving suspiciously. The suspects sped off when the police teams approached them.
The chase resulted in the car veering off the road.
Sabtu said that when the policemen approached the car, they heard several gunshots.
Two suspects ran into the plantation and later attacked the policemen with a parang and sickle before they were shot. The other two were shot dead inside the car after they opened fire at police.
Police recovered a sawnoff shotgun and various items believed to be from earlier robberies in the car.
Sabtu said police were trying to ascertain the identities of the suspects who did not carry documents.
He said police have been tracking the group, which was linked to at least 28 cases in Bintulu involving four to five armed masked men, for the past month.
Kidurong assemblyman Chiew Ching Sing said the shooting happened in his constituency and the matter was of public interest.
He urged the police to disclose the identities of the suspects.
