PARIS: A massive fire broke out in Paris near a new court complex designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, causing smoke to fill the city's airspace on Monday.
Following the incident, authorities urged the public to stay away from the area.
Meanwhile, thick black smoke was visible across the French capital as firefighters tried to extinguish a fire that was spreading at one of the city's largest recycling plants. The fire brigade said 60 fire trucks and 200 firefighters were at the scene and informed that there were no casualties involved.
The incident also forced authorities to close part of the main roads around Paris to make way for fire vehicles heading to the burning building.
Arrondissement Mayor Geoffrey Boulard said the fire brigade arrived at the scene quickly but the raging fire destroyed the entire building.
"The building was completely destroyed. The fire brigade arrived very quickly, but the fire broke out underground and then spread to the entire building," he said.
Meanwhile, the fire at the Syctom recycling plant occurred close to the main Paris court complex, which is a glass skyscraper designed by Piano and inaugurated in 2018.
