PETALING JAYA: It was the wrong time and place for a 26-year-old Mongolian woman who was shot four times during a drive-by shooting at Dataran Bandar Utama.
Police believe Nomin Erdene, also known as Luna, was not the target of the gunman.
They suspect the real target was her 35-year-old acquaintance from Sibu.
The man, who was in the four-wheel-drive vehicle with Luna, escaped unhurt.
Luna survived the four gunshots in the 5.45pm incident on Monday, and is now in stable condition in hospital.
The man, who was driving the vehicle, had just picked up Luna and was talking on the phone when assailants opened fire. The two men fired eight shots at the driver's window.
It is believed that one of the suspects was an associate of the businessman.
The suspect, who is known as "Brother", is suspected to be the mastermind behind the shooting.
Police investigations showed that the suspect harboured a personal vendetta against the "Datuk" businessman due to a business deal that went awry.
It is believed the suspect was also involved in illegal cyber gambling, illegal logging and prostitution activities.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Azmi Abu Kassim said investigations found that the businessman had a criminal record, but declined to elaborate further.
"He claims that he received threats via phone and his house in Sibu was also shot at last year. He believes the shooting was orchestrated by Brother," he said.
ACP Azmi confirmed that the assailant used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. He added police were now determining when Luna entered Malaysia.
