PUTRAJAYA: A workshop organised by the Transport Ministry to revisit regulations for tinted vehicles has proposed that the minimum light transmission level for rear windshields and passenger windows be reduced to 30% from the existing 50%.
The two-day workshop, which ended Tuesday, was attended by more than 100 participants representing various stakeholders including enforcement agencies, consumer groups, private entities and non-governmental organisations.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi is expected to present the proposal to Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Wednesday.
“The workshop has also recommended that the visible light transmittance (VLT) for the front windshield and the driver’s window be maintained at 70% and 50% respectively.
“The stakeholders have also agreed that businesses selling vehicle glass tints should be equipped with devices for VLT testing which must be calibrated every 12 months.
“These are still in the proposal stage and it will be up to the Minister to make the final decision,” Abdul Aziz said to reporters, Tuesday.
The workshop came on the heels of an announced nationwide crackdown, expected to kick-off on June 16, against vehicle owners with licence plates and tinted windows that do not meet specified regulations.
