TAIPING: Thousands of people thronged the streets here to attend the national-level Chinese New Year open house celebration.
Several roads leading to Dataran Warisan were cordoned off so that visitors could walk to the venue before the opening ceremony by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday.
Guests, including tourists from the United States, Hong Kong, Germany, Canada, Indonesia and Brunei, were treated to a sumptuous spread of local fare like char kuey teow, satay, spiced rice and fruits.
They were also serenaded by a host of local artistes, including Suki, Stella Chung, Datuk Jamal Abdillah, Jaclyn Victor and the Fourteen Group.
The open house, hosted by the Tourism and Culture Ministry, was held in collaboration with the Perak government.
In his speech, Najib said the people should not take the country’s peace and harmony for granted.
“To maintain this, we have to practise moderation,” he said. “It is not good to make fun of people as it doesn’t reflect Malaysians,” Najib said.
MCA President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Chinese New Year marked a time of renewal for the community. He urged the people to be swift and strong like the horse, moving forward to help develop the country.
