KUALA LUMPUR : A total of 170 illegal immigrants were detained during a massive Ops Bersepadu carried out by the Immigration Department near Suria KLCC, here today.
The 12.30pm raid, was held at a park near the shopping mall that was known to be a popular meeting point among illegal immigrants.
The operation was conducted by 250 officers from the Putrajaya Immigration Department, Royal Malaysian Police, National Registration Department, Public Service Department and Rela.
Immigration Department deputy director-general (operations), Sakib Kusmi said out of the 350 immigrants screened, 180 had valid documentation and were let off.
“We have nabbed 120 men, 46 women and four children, they were detained for various offences including not having valid travel documents, overstaying as well as misusing their travel permit.”
“70 Bangladeshis, 60 Myanmars, 20 Indonesians and 20 others of different nationalities have been detained during the operation,” said Sakib adding that those captured were between 20 and 40 years of age.
Sakib said the three-hour operation was a success and had exceeded the department’s initial target of detaining about 80 illegal immigrants loitering around the city centre.
“Thanks to National Registration Department’s latest technology, the scanning process to determine immigrants’s permit status was made easy and smooth,” he said.
Sakib added that the department would continue holding operations to curb illegal immigrants from overstaying in the country.
As of Feb 21 this year, 794 operations have been conducted by the Immigration Department and 5,508 illegal immigrants out of 21,624 screened, had been detained .
