CRIMINAL AMONGST US, GANG MEMBER " A UPSTANDING BUSINESSMAN" IN AMPANG HILIR SHOOTOUT

4 robbers killed in shoot-out with police

KUALA LUMPUR: By day, he projected the appearance of being an upstanding businessman and blended in with other residents of Hiliran Ampang People's Housing Project flats.

Little did his neighbours realise that the Indonesian man was a hardened criminal and member of the notorious Ah Fatt Gang.

His dark deeds finally caught up with him yesterday when he and his three accomplices were shot dead after opening fire on a police raiding party that had tracked down the gang.

The gang had robbed a residence in Kampung Melayu, Sungai Sering in the Bukit Antarabangsa, yesterday.
The victims were an army retiree and his family, who were tied up and relieved of their valuables and jewellery, as well as RM2,000 cash.
City police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said, following a report lodged by the victim, police matched the robbers' description with that of the gang, and dispatched a task force.
He said the men were known to be serial robbers, active since 2008, with a penchant for robbing homes of VIPs.
At 12pm, police finally traced the quartet to a flat unit on the 15th floor, Block B, of the three-block flats in Jalan Ampang Putra here near Taman Dagang.
As the team waited on the ground floor, a local taxi driver, a frequent buyer of the gang's stolen items, emerged and was arrested.
As police stormed the unit, one of the gang members opened fire. The police team returned fire and killed all four criminals.
A search of the residence led to the recovering of a revolver and loot stolen in the Bukit Antarabangsa heist.
Mohmad said the flat was the home of one of the gang members, and was most likely used as a regular meeting place. He said the remains of the four were sent to Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for post mortem.
"We are now looking for two more gang members who are believed to have left the location earlier."
Mohmad said the gang members, all Indonesians in their 30s and 40s, usually set out in a team of four to six per heist. He said they have reason to believe that the members were also individually armed with pistols.
