Two cops remanded over death of debt collector
GEORGE TOWN: A lance corporal and a sergeant together with five others have been remanded by the Sessions Court for five days over the death of a 38-year-old debt collector.
Senior Registrar Mohd Faiz Md Zain issued the remand order on Tuesday.
The lance corporal, in his early 30s, is based at the Kulim police station while the 55-year-old sergeant is from the Johor police contingent.
Their remand until Oct 19 was to facilitate the investigation into the death of the debt collector who was shot at about 2.30am last Monday at an entertainment outlet in Auto City, Bukit Mertajam.
It is learnt that the others included a 34-year-old woman believed to be a friend of the policemen. The other four men, in their 30s and 40s, were friends of the deceased.
Police have confiscated the corporal’s pistol at a house in Kulim while a 9mm Luger bullet casing and a live bullet of the same kind were recovered from the scene.
At a Hari Raya Haji celebration at the Patani Road police station today, Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said it is believed that a fight among the three men had led to the shooting.
