BANGKOK: The 2023 Asian Athletics Championships drew its curtain at the Suphachalasai National Stadium here, yesterday when the Malaysian contingent returned with its maiden medal with the national discus thrower, Irfan Shamsuddin contributing the bronze medal, on Saturday.

In yesterday's final action, the national men's 4x400 meter (m) quartet consisting of the 2023 SEA Games 400m champion, Umar Osman, Abdul Wafiy Roslan, Muhammad Firdaus Mohamad Zemi and Ruslem Zikry Putra Roseli took seventh place with a time of 3 minutes 11.63 seconds (s). .

On Saturday, the national quartet clocked 3:10.62s.

The gold medal was won by Sri Lanka with a time of 3:01.56s, the silver medal belonged to India (3:01.80s) and the bronze went to Qatar with a time of 3:04.26s.

Abdul Wafiy said the quartet line-up that performed at the tournament this time was a new pairing with Ruslem Zikry performing together for the second time.

The quartet clocked 3:14.46s at the Singapore Open last April.

In addition, he said Muhammad Firdaus was also unwell due to food poisoning.

"We aimed for a 3:09s in the final but fell short.

"However, we hope to be able to renew the time records at the Chengdu World University Games (Universiade) in China from July 28 to August 8," he said.

Meanwhile, the women's shot put national record holder, Nani Sahirah Maryata, who made her debut at the tournament, threw 14.92m to finish 10th.

"I feel disappointed because I failed to renew the record of 15.22m which was done at the Perak All-Comers Championship last April," he said.

"Nevertheless, the competition at this tournament has motivated and instilled the spirit of fighting to do better throwing in the future," he said.

The event was won by the Chinese representative, Song Jia Yuan with a throw of 18.88m while the silver and bronze medals respectively belonged to Indian athletes, Abha Khatua (18.06m) and Manpreet Kaur (17m).
