COVID-19: Thailand records 4,803 new cases, 34 fatalities

BANGKOK, May 29 -- Thailand reported 4,803 new COVID-19 cases, and 31 new deaths, bringing the total infections in the kingdom to 149,779 and 988 fatalities to date.

Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin said of the new cases, 4,752 were local transmissions and 51 imported cases including 47 Thais who returned from Cambodia. Of the total, 2,702 cases involve prison inmates.

To date, he said a total of 46, 480 people including 1,221 were in serious condition and 406 on ventilators.

“A total of 120, 916 cases and 894 fatalities have been recorded in about two months since the third wave of COVID-19 outbreak that began in April,” he said at COVID-19 daily briefing here today.

Taweesin said to date a total of 43 actives clusters have been detected in Bangkok including 15 at construction workers’ camp, 12 linked to markets and shopping malls.

Prison cluster remain a major concern in the kingdom following overcrowding. Corrections Department showed more than 22,000 inmates have tested positive in 15 prisons in the kingdom.

To date, there are about 310,000 inmates in its 143 jails nationwide.

On the new fatalities, Taweesin said 18 were men and 16 women aged between 35 and 87 years old including 21 in Bangkok, two each in Samut Prakan, Chiang Rai and Pathum Thani.

Meanwhile, the Digital Economy and Society Ministry said stern action will be taken against those spreading fake news about COVID-19 vaccine contained pork gelatin or pig fat.

The Nation reported that the ministry’s Anti-Fake News Centre said the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has thoroughly inspected the ingredients of both types of vaccines and found no trace of pork fat.

“Please do not share such information, as it could spread misunderstanding amid the outbreak,” it added.
