KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 -- A local man who allegedly carried out extortion activities and issued death threats against several individuals around Petaling Jaya was arrested by police, yesterday afternoon.

Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the 29-year-old man was arrested at Jalan Pantai Cenang, Langkawi at about 2 pm yesterday.

“A total of 35 reports, involving the same type of extortion, was lodged by different victims in Damansara, Kota Damansara and Sungai Way areas from the beginning of this month until Wednesday,” he said in a statement today.

He said in the latest report, a woman claimed to have received a threatening text message (SMS) asking her to deposit RM10,000 in a local account and if not she would be killed.

According to him, the same threat was also received by other victims.

Police also confiscated four mobile phones and an ATM card from the suspect when he was arrested, he said.

Nik Ezanee said initial investigation found that the man did not plead guilty to the crime of extortion and claimed that his phone was hacked by an unscrupulous individual.

However, he said inspection also found that the suspect had a previous criminal record related to gambling.

The man has been remanded for three days from today until Tuesday and is being investigated under Section 385 of the Penal Code for extortion, which carries a prison sentence of up to seven years and a fine or both, upon conviction.
